With the current thaw in relations between the U.S. and Cuba, the reality of much more trade with the island nation has any cigar lovers salivating. This brings the question, Are Cuban cigars really that good? If you ask the experts, the short answer is no. That is not to say that Cuba does not make some very good cigars, over the years, what used to be the undisputed king of top notch cigar production has lost much of its luster. When the commies moved in many of Cuba’s top cigar making families fled to many neighboring Caribbean countries. taking generations of cigar making know how … and lots of high quality seeds with them. These families went about buying good farm land and developing cigar empires in their new homelands. While the Cubans kept there prices high and let their quality stagnate… the new and growing power houses started off under cutting the Cubans prices and constantly bettering there product. The two counties that take a lions share of the honors for producing the best cigars in the world are the Dominican Republic and Nicaragua. As a glaring example of just how far ahead of Cuba these two countries really are in producing world class cigars, in last years Cigar Aficionado’s top 25 cigars list 21 of the top 25 cigars are produced in either Nicaragua or Dominican Republic.

In conclusion, Cuba makes some really good cigars that are just dripping with history and mystique but you will pay for that heritage. If you are looking for a good cigar over hype?… trust the experts and your own taste and look for cigars that are high quality for the money, not based necessarily on country of origin.
